Presentations to University Students and Community Groups

Introduction
Having graduated in Gaelic Language and History from University College Cork, I became a teacher and later, a second level school principal. Following early retirement a few years ago I focused on my interests in early Irish history, the Gaelic language and its traditions.

Presentations
My presentations are comprehensively illustrated and are on early Irish history and the Gaelic language with their great heritage in stone, bronze, gold, manuscripts and learning. I sing in Gaelic and in English in the Sean Nós or traditional Irish style as part of each presentation.

I have toured and presented in America 5 times, visiting New York, Boston, Chicago and Pennsylvania and am a regular visitor to Villanova University and Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. I have also enjoyed presenting to community groups, public libraries and private family groups in Ireland, America and Hungary.

I have visited Hungary each year since 2006 and have presented there in 9 universities which do Irish Studies. I was honored to make a presentation on traditional Irish singing in the Zoltan Kodaly Institute of Kecskemet.

The presentations in universities are directed at students who are doing Irish Studies or who have an interest in Ireland. They aim to enhance the material covered by the college by dealing with the Gaelic language and early history as an inspiration for Anglo-Irish writers.
In America it has been my pleasure to present Irish history and Gaelic culture to Irish-American groups and students around the St. Patrick’s Day Festival time.

Presentations cover the following areas

Cultural History of Gaelic Ireland
Early settlers, New Grange, gold treasures of the bronze and iron ages; Christian Ireland and art work - chalices, book shrines, the Book of Kells; Irish monasteries and missionary monks and their unique contribution to Western European learning.

History of Gaelic Language
Early origins of Gaelic language, links with the other Celtic languages, oral tradition, early written Gaelic script, mythology, sagas and poetry, sources for Anglo-Irish literature.

Irish Music and Song
Traditional Irish music, musical instruments, love songs, songs of historical events, emigration songs, songs of place and political songs.

Terms and Costs
Fees are appropriate to available finances and resources and can be discussed.

I am planning to do a coast-to-coast tour of America for February, March, and April 2011 and would welcome expressions of interest as soon as possible to assist my planning.

In 2010 I made a presentation on the place of the Irish language in 20th/21st century Ireland at the Irish Studies conference at Lake Balaton in Hungary. I presented an evening of Irish song and poetry also at this conference.
Festival: Omos do Shean 'Ac Dhonncha. I initiated and worked on the organisation of this highly successful festival in tribute to the traditional singer Sean 'Ac Dhonncha in Ahascragh, Co. Galway October 2011.
